What is Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD)?

Persistent genital arousal disorder (PGAD) is a rare condition affecting about 1% of women where a woman becomes sexually aroused unwantedly. You may experience all the symptoms that come with arousals, both in the genitals and the breasts, even when there’s no reason to feel aroused. These sensations happen without sexual desire and are not relieved by orgasm.

Although it is more prevalent in women but can occur in men. Although it is rare, the number of women living with this condition is much more than reported. These women are embarrassed to discuss about this due to the illness’ taboo nature.

What are the symptoms of PGAD?

The main symptom is the unwanted arousal resulting in increased blood flow to the clitoris, labia, perineum and /or anus. For most women, it starts suddenly. The symptoms can last hours or even days or weeks.

Other symptoms may include:

  • Pain or discomfort in genitals.
  • Vaginal lubrication
  • Vaginal contractions
  • Tingling in clitoris
  • Unpredictable orgasms.
  • Unpredictable orgasms.

Orgasms may relieve symptoms briefly, but the symptoms return quickly.

Why Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD) happens?

We do not know exactly what causes PGAD. It is likely to be a combination of various factors.

  • Mental Health issues (Stress, anxiety or depression)
  • Tarlov cysts (cysts at the base of the spine)
  • Medications such as SSRIs
  • Pelvic Floor Muscle Dysfunction
  • Herniated discs at your spine
  • Endometriosis can be a risk factor

When Should I see the Specialist?

If you have an unwanted sexual arousal is happening to you, speak to the GP for referral to us. It is important to discuss the issue of PGAD with our team.
