Why my periods are heavy?

Heavy periods (also known as menorrhagia in medical term) is quite common. Most women don’t experience blood loss severe enough to call it as menorrhagia. There are many possible causes of heavy periods. Treatment is based upon how it affects your daily life. If you soak through a pad or tampon every hour or so on a regular basis, you will need treatment.

Causes of heavy periods: 

There are many causes of heavy periods ranging from simple issues like hormonal imbalance to more serious uterine cancer.

Some of the common causes of heavy periods:

• Hormonal imbalance- Significant changes in hormones can cause heavy periods like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or transition to menopause.
• Uterine fibroids – best described as non-cancerous growths of the uterus that can cause heavy periods.
• Endometriosis- A chronic pelvic pain condition affecting 1 in 10 women can cause heavy periods.
• Adenomyosis of the uterus- This condition occurs when glands from the endometrium become embedded in the uterine muscle, often causing heavy bleeding and painful periods.
• Rarely Cancer of the uterus and cervix can cause heavy bleeding.
