Urinary incontinence means a person leaks urine accidentally. However, it is incredibly common but super annoying and an embarrassing problem affecting millions of women. In Australia 1 in 3 women suffer from urinary incontinence. This can be occasional leakage of few drops of urine to frequent and urgent trips to toilet.

Many women think that urinary incontinence is part of ageing. However, it can occur at any age group. The good news is that this can be controlled and/or treated.

Types of Urinary Incontinence:

  • Stress incontinence. Urine leaks when you exert pressure on your bladder by coughing, sneezing, laughing, exercising or lifting something heavy.
  • Urge incontinence. This happens when you have a sudden urge to void but did not have enough time to reach the toilet. This can also be described as having a “gotta go” feeling.  You may need to urinate often, including throughout the night.
  • Overflow incontinence. You experience frequent or constant dribbling of urine due to a bladder that doesn’t empty completely.
  • Functional incontinence.A physical or mental impairment keeps you from making it to the toilet in time. For example, if you have severe arthritis, you may not be able to reach toilet in time.
  • Mixed incontinence. You experience more than one type of urinary incontinence — most often this refers to a combination of stress incontinence and urge incontinence.
