What is Hysteroscopic tubal patency test?
Tubal patency test is an important investigation for infertility workup. Hysteroscopic tubal patency test is the test conducted in the office to find out whether the fallopian tubes are patent or not.
What are the other tests for tubal patency?
There are different methods to check the patency of Fallopian tubes
- Hysterosalpingography (HSG)
- Hysterosalpingo contrast sonography (HyCoSy)
- Laparoscopy and dye test.
How hysteroscopic tubal patency test is performed?
We can do hysteroscopies in the office under local anaesthetic. Women are advised to take painkillers before attending for the procedure. Women don’t have to take time off for work. Women will be able to see the images of the uterus while we perform the hysteroscope. Uterine cavity is assessed at the same time.
How hysteroscopic tubal patency test is different from others?
HSG and HyCoSy require the need of X-rays or ultrasound respectively. Laparoscopic dye test is an invasive procedure which requires general anaesthesia. However, in some cases of difficult cervical dilatation, these methods can give false-negative result.
Office hysteroscopic tubal patency test offers direct view of the uterus , avoids radiation unlike hysterosalpingography or avoids general anaesthesia required for laparoscopy.
Office hysteroscopy is also helpful in diagnosing abnormal uterine conditions such as fibroids protruding into the uterine cavity, scarring, polyps, and congenital malformations.
