Non-invasive tests for Endometriosis

Endometriosis affects 1in 10 of all women of reproductive age. Endometriosis is often misdiagnosed or remains undiagnosed for 7 to 11 years. Currently laparoscopy remains the reliable method of diagnosing this condition.  There are several non-invasive tests emerging which can help identify the condition, potentially reducing the use of invasive procedure like Laparoscopy.

Non- invasive tests for Endometriosis:

 Blood tests:

PromarkerEndo a blood test has shown promising results in clinical trials potentially reducing the need for laparoscopy for diagnosis.

Saliva Tests:

Ziwig Endotest is a commercially available saliva test that analyses microRNAs to detect endometriosis, offering another non-invasive option.  This is not yet available in Australia, but patients can access by travel to Europe and India but needs to be requested by the local gynaecologist.

Imaging tests:

•  Ultrasound: By the trained specialists, endometriomas and deep infiltrating can be diagnosed by using Transvaginal and transabdominal scans.
• MRI: This method is very useful in cases of deep infiltrating endometriosis.

 Limitations:

 Although these blood and saliva tests are potentially helpful in diagnosing endometriosis early, they are still under development and require further validation.

Ultrasound and MRI scans require interpretation by skilled professionals to identify endometriosis.
