If you have difficulty in conceiving, endometriosis may be part of the problem. Most commonly endometriosis causes pelvic pain, and it can affect the uterus, ovaries and other pelvic organs. 30-50% of women with endometriosis experience fertility issues.

However, the good news is that effective treatments are available. 

How endometriosis contributes to infertility?

  • Distorted anatomy of the pelvis
  • Adhesions
  • Scarred fallopian tubes.
  • Inflammation of the pelvic structures
  • Altered immune function
  • Changes in the hormonal environment of the eggs
  • Impaired implantation of a pregnancy
  • Altered egg quality

Treatment options

A range of treatment options are available to manage the condition and avoid complications.

They include:

  • Hormonal therapies
  • Pain management
  • Surgical interventions

Surgery can help improve fertility

In a study by Schippert et al., 120 women with endometriosis, 79 (65.8%) became pregnant naturally after excision surgery. This study reported that, “complete removal of the endometriosis lesions may increase the chance of future pregnancy.” This also lessens the need for the expensive IVF treatment.
